Commercial and academic ties are strengthened between Canada and Zacatecas

Secretaries Del Campo and Secretaries of the Economy met with the Minister of Agriculture of Alberta and with researchers from the University of Calgary

The objective is to exchange experiences and acquire knowledge to improve cattle production in the state

On behalf of Governor David Monreal Ávila, the Secretaries of the Countryside and the Economy held meetings during the work tour of Canada, with advances for academic exchange and experiences in the agricultural sector.

In his meeting with the Minister of Agriculture of Alberta, RJ Sigurdson, and his subsequent visit to the University of Calgary, Jesús Padilla and Rodrigo Castañeda, Secretaries of Agriculture and Economy, expressed the interest of the Government of Zacatecas in knowing the research activities for the genetic improvement of cattle, as well as establishing a bilateral relationship of trade and investment, to strengthen the primary sector.

Accompanied by the Undersecretary of Agriculture, Juan Manuel García, and the Director of Investment Management and Promotion, Yannick Berchtold, before the Canadian authorities they indicated that they seek to exchange experiences with the agricultural sector, with the possibility that Canadian companies can invest in the state of Zacatecas.

They raised the interest that Zacatecan products be marketed in Canada, the greatest possibility being canola, for edible oils, and wheat, for cattle.

At the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Calgary, they pondered promoting agreements with the public schools of Zacatecas for the exchange of students, in addition to sharing experiences and research on the subject of livestock.

Researchers from the University shared their experiences in the study of bovine cattle, particularly in the areas of infectious diseases and reproduction.

With this research, the well-being of the bovine sector is promoted, through state-of-the-art facilities for genomic studies and other laboratory technologies.

The Secretary of the Field highlighted the interest in promoting the productivity of the primary sector in Zacatecas, so this exchange of experiences pays to generate bonds and research opportunities for the improvement of cattle herds in the state.

For the Government of Zacatecas headed by David Monreal Ávila, the countryside is one of the axes of work; and in the livestock sector, he said, it seeks to provide viability, for which a total of 12 Expo Agricultural Fairs have been carried out, with coverage in the 58 municipalities of the state.

This year, he added, three Expo Fairs have been held and there is an investment perspective of more than 550 million pesos, to continue strengthening farmers and peasants.

The province of Alberta, where the visit was made by the Zacatecan delegation, is the largest producer of cattle in Canada, with 5.3 million head in 2022.

Cattle dominate livestock production, but pigs, poultry, and sheep are also raised. In addition, the province has 40,638 farms and more than 50 million acres (200 million hectares) of agricultural area dedicated to agriculture and livestock.
